Bağış: Veli Yüksel Türk toplumunun elçisi
Flaman Parlementosu Kültür ve Spor Komisyonu, Milletvekili Veli Yüksel'in başkanlığında Devlet Bakanı ve Başmüzakereci Egemen Bağış'la yemekli bir toplantı yaptı. Bakan Bağış Flaman Parlementosu Kültür ve Spor Komisyonu heyetini istanbul'da ağırlamaktan mutluluk duyduğunu ifade etti. Avrupa Birliği ve Türkiye ilişkileri, Belçika Türk toplumu ve ikili ilişkilere değinen Bağış bu ziyaretin Flaman hükümeti ve Türkiye arasındaki bağları pekiştireceğine inandıgını söyledi. Egemen Bağış konuşmasında bu ziyaretin Milletvekili Veli Yüksel'in insiyatif ve başkanlığında gerçekleştirilmesinin ayrI bir özelliğe sahip olduğuna vurgu yaptı.

Milletvekili Yüksel: Vlaanderen ve Türkiye ilişkilerinde yeni adımlar
Milletvekili yaptığı konuşmada Türk kökenli bir siyasetçi olarak Istanbu'la resmi bir heyeti temsil etmekten mutlu olduğunu belirtti. Veli Yüksel: "Flaman bölgesi ve Türkiye arasında ilişkilerin artması için Başbakanımız Kris Peeters tarafından haziran da attığı adımların devamının gelmesi gerekmektedir. Buna bölgemizde yasayan Türk toplumunun ve is adamlarının ihtiyacı var. Türkiye Flaman bölgesinin en fazla ihracat yaptığı ülkeler arasında 15.ci sırada yer almaktadır. Ekonomik, egitim ve kültür alanlarında Vlaanderen ve Türkiye arasında işbirliğini artırmalıyız. Bunun için de geniş kapsamlı yeni bir işbirliği antlaşmasına ihtiyacımız var. Başka bir konuda dan AB-Türkiye ilişkileri, bu konu bizi yakından iligilendirmektedir. Belçika şu anda Avrupa Birliği Dönem Başkanlığı'nı yürütmektedir.

Geçtiğimiz ay Türkiye'de yapılan referandumun Türkiye'de demokrasi adına atılmış önemli bir adım olarak görüyoruz. Referandum sonucunu AB adaylığına ivme kazandırmasını bekliyoruz. Başkan Kadir Topbaş'a ziyaret
Flaman Parlementosu Kültür ve Spor Komisyonu heyeti programına ilk önce İstanbul Belediye Başkanı Kadir Topbaş'ı ziyaret ederek başladı. Yüksel ve beraberinde 11 milletvekili komisyon üyesi bu ziyarette görüş alışverişi ardından Başkan Topbaş'ı Belçika'ya davet ettiler.
Milletvekili Veli Yüksel ve beraberinde 11 komisyon üyesinin bu programı İstanbul ve Türkiye için Flaman Bölge Parlementosu üyeleri olarak toplu halde yapılan ilk resmi ziyaret olarak görülüyor. Flaman Bölge Parlementosu Kültür ve Spor Komisyonu üyeleri 2010 İstanbul'da Avrupa Kültür Şehri İstanbul projesi kamsamında yapılan etkinliklere katılmak üzere Türkiye'de bulunuyor.
Flaman Parlementosu Kültür ve Spor Komisyonu üyeleri İstanbul Belediye Başkanı Kadir Topbaş'a yapılan ziyaret dışında Belçika Krallığı'nın İstanbul Başkonsolosluğu'nda restore edilen resepsiyon salonlarının açılış töreninde de biraraya geldiler.
Belçika Delegasyonunun ziyaretine başta CNN olmak üzere Türk basını da özel ilgi gösterdi. Ünlü gazeteci Mehmet Ali Birand Flaman Bölgesi Milletvekillerini Türkiye'de Medya ve Siyaset hakkında bilgilendirdi.

Speech Istanbul: European Capital of Culture of 2010

Ladies and gentlemen,
Dear friends,
On the sixteenth (16th) of January two thousand and ten (2010), fireworks and artistic performances marked the launch of Istanbul's year as one of the three European Capitals of Culture. At the time, I was invited by the Turkish Prime Minister to witness the festivities and spent two very interesting and entertaining days in Istanbul. Today, I am here again, addressing you as a Flemish Member of Parliament with Turkish roots. As you all know, Flanders has a large Turkish community, roughly estimated at some eighty thousand people. The many young and dynamic Flemish entrepreneurs of Turkish origin can help building bridges between Flanders and Turkey, not only in economical issues, but also in the field of education and culture.
Istanbul is one of the three cities chosen by the European ministers of Culture to be European Capitals of Culture. I find they have made a good choice. Although in the eyes of some Istanbul is not a part of Europe, for thousands of years this city has been the heart of various civilisations, whose territories spread far beyond the borders of modern day Turkey and well into Europe. The soul of this rich cultural heritage still lives on today.
Throughout all of two thousand and ten (2010), Istanbul is putting its historical and cultural heritage and its vibrant city life in the limelight. From theatre and music to sports or modern design, there are plenty of activities and events for everyone to enjoy. Bringing the cultural scene of a city, in all its different facets, to international attention, is a real challenge. We have had previous experiences in Flanders, where Antwerp, Brussels and Bruges have been European Capitals of Culture. These cities have had a unique opportunity to put themselves on the cultural map of Europe, and still benefit from it today.
I'm pleased to be able to bring you a positive message from Flanders. Since the Cultural Agreement between Belgium and Turkey, signed in 1958, there have been no new cultural cooperation agreements between our two governments. But Flanders intends to renew this collaboration. Besides economical initiatives, we want to develop projects in the fields of culture, education and research, in order to forge durable relationships, which we can and should have with countries such as Turkey. Some initiatives and cooperation agreements have already been put into place. To name but one example, the University of Ghent, the city where I myself live, upholds intensive partnerships with various Turkish universities. But we lack official agreements. As, in the Belgian state structure, Flanders is responsible for matters regarding education, culture and economy, we do have the possibility and the instruments to speed up this process.
Ladies and gentlemen,
We are making progress. Our Flemish Minister-President Kris Peeters has led a two-day mission in Turkey in June. It was the first official visit ever brought to Turkey by a Flemish Minister-President, but there is no doubt that it will not be the last. Together with representatives of some thirty Flemish companies, the Minister-President visited the cities Ankara and Istanbul to intensify the trade relations and to seek opportunities for export from Flanders. This economic mission was organised by the Flemish agency Flanders Investment and Trade, which considers Turkey as one of its focus countries. This reflects once again the increasing economic importance of Turkey for Flanders.
During his trip, the Minister-President has referred to Turkey as 'the BRIC-country in our backyard'. And rightly so, because Turkey is a young and fast-growing country. The OECD predicts an average annual economic growth of six point seven per cent (6,7%) over the next years. This is the highest figure in all of the OECD-countries. It is an impressive figure, which can compete with countries such as China and Brazil. At the same time Turkey, with a market of more than seventy three (73) million people, is geographically much closer to us than those two countries. Its strategic location on the gateway to the Middle East is an enormous asset.
For a number of companies, this two-day economic mission was their first introduction to the Turkish market. Meanwhile, some companies such as MIPs NV, Best NV and Hummingbird Ventures have signed concrete cooperation agreements. Today, Antwerp is the main European port for Turkish export, and Turkey is the fifteenth export destination of our region.
Ladies and gentlemen,
I would like to seize this opportunity to briefly ass the issue of the accession of Turkey to the European Union. During the meetings of our Minister-President in Ankara with the Turkish vice Prime Minister Ali Babacan and the ministers of Finances, Agriculture and Public Works, and the next day in Istanbul with President Abdullah Gül, the Turkish candidacy to the European Union has been on the table.
I am convinced that Belgium will play an important role in the future of the European integration. As president of the European Council, our country will not only support, but encourage the process of the accession of Turkey to the European Union. Minister Bagis, only this week you had a meeting with our Foreign Affairs minister Steven Vanackere. I share your hopes that the Belgian presidency will lead to the opening of new chapters in the negotiations.
Since October 2005, we have been monitoring these negotiations closely. We congratulate Turkey on the result of last month's referendum: it is a turning point for the Turkish democracy. A majority of the Turkish electorate has expressed its support for reforms which will enhance their rights and freedoms. This is a big step with regard to the accession of Turkey to the European Union.
Finally, I would like to express my gratitude. Everyone here will agree that so far, we have had two fantastic, constructive days. The first day of our visit, we have had a particularly interesting meeting with the agency that was created for Istanbul 2010. Yesterday, mayor Topbas has received us with warmth and generosity. We appreciate this very much. In the evening, we have attended the inauguration of the restored 'Belgian Palace'. The Belgian government bought this nineteenth century building in the year nineteen hundred (1900), a hundred and ten years ago. It is a speaking example of Istanbul's beautiful architecture, and it reflects the importance Belgium accorded to this city and to the Ottoman Empire, both in political, economical, commercial and cultural terms.
During the time of our stay, we have repeatedly experienced the well-known Turkish hospitality, including today. We would like to thank the Turkish minister of European Affairs and chief negotiator with the European Union Egemen Bagis for this lunch and for his very generous and warm welcome.
